In Las Vegas, two dead and six injured in a stabbing attack on the Strip

The assailant, who had fled after his actions in the middle of the Strip, was arrested by a security guard and police.

Two people died and at least six others were injured this Thursday, October 6 during a stabbing attack in front of a casino in  Las Vegas , announced the authorities of this American metropolis.

The victims of this attack, which took place at the end of the morning on the Strip, this long boulevard where huge buildings dedicated to gambling follow one another for miles, are "victims and locals" , said Sheriff Joe Lombardo during a press conference.

The assailant used a large knife with a long blade and struck without warning, said James LaRochelle, a spokesman for the Las Vegas police.

The stab wounds were given to a first victim "on the sidewalk without any provocation" , he said.

The suspect then attacked several other people along the street.

“Two of them are dead, three are in critical condition. The other victims are in hospital ,” he said.

Several people on the Strip chased the assailant, who was eventually arrested by a security guard and police, according to James LaRochelle.

The suspect, described by police as a Latino man in his thirties, is a priori not from Las Vegas.

In front of the city's major casinos, traffic remained closed on part of the Strip Thursday afternoon, while police examined the crime scene for clues.

Stabbing attacks are relatively rare in the United States , where mass killings carried out with firearms are, on the other hand, very common.

Five years ago, Las Vegas experienced one of the worst mass shootings in recent American history.

In October 2017, 58 people died and hundreds more were injured when Stephen Paddock, a 60-year-old who fired more than 1,000 bullets from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay casino into a crowd attending a country music concert outside.

This retired accountant then committed suicide during the police assault.
