Shooting in Texas: in the United States, more firearms in circulation always lead to more deaths

Studies on the subject are unambiguous: the States where the most weapons circulate are also those which experience the most homicides by firearm.

However, the work carried out on the subject across the Atlantic is clear: the higher the number of firearms in circulation, the more violence committed by firearms increases. States with a significant proportion of their population owning firearms experience homicide rates 114% higher than those with less armed populations.

The firearm death rate nevertheless drops in states where restrictions exist (such as the ban on assault rifles, the obligation to store the weapon in a secure place or the obligation to offer a notch of safety).

A study published in 2013 on the link between possession of firearms and homicides committed by firearms established a clear correlation between the two: each time the former increases by 1%, the rate of the latter increases by 0.9%.

It also notes that the armed share of the population declined between 1981 and 2010: from 60.6% armed adults, this share fell to 51.7% in 2010, with most of this decline concentrated in the 1990s (from 59.6% to 52.8% between 1991 and 2001). As a result, the number of homicides committed by firearms has also declined: from 5.2 per 100,000 in 1981 to 3.5 per 100,000 in 2010 (a drop of one third).
