United States: unions organize at Amazon

It's a small revolution: in New York, in the United States, the employees of a second Amazon warehouse vote this week for the creation of a union. Across the country, more and more employees are turning to unionization to defend their rights.

The polling station is set up under a large tent in the parking lot of the LDJ5 warehouse in the windy industrial area of Staten Island in New York. The 1,800 employees of the Amazon site will parade there until Friday, April 29 to say whether or not they agree to join the Amazon Labor Union (ALU).

This union, the first ever created within the online sales giant in the United States, was born only a few weeks ago: it was just across the street, in another Amazon warehouse. With the same procedure: the vote had been validated by the agency responsible for labor law, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), which must first authorize it to verify that at least 30% of the site's employees are favorable.

Wages and working conditions

Inevitably, it gave ideas to their colleagues opposite, who also want to have a say in their salaries and working conditions. “ We work 12 hours a day instead of 8 , said a warehouse worker on Sunday in front of the crowd of employees. Amazon makes us work more to earn less, and where does the money go? Not in our pockets, but in those millionaires and Wall Street! ”

Since its creation in 1994, Amazon has always succeeded in repelling union ambitions. The multinational filed an appeal against the vote that took place in the first warehouse, saying that union activists "threatened" and "intimidated" employees to "force them to vote yes" .

Charges that the union also makes against Amazon, which it accuses of having pressured employees to vote … no. Amazon is the country's second largest employer after supermarket chain Wallmart.
