How Shah Rukh Khan, the actor with millions, fell victim to a Bollywood witch hunt

The Indian Shah Rukh Khan, a Muslim actor with millions of fans, has become the Modi government's pet peeve despite himself. The recent arrest of her son illustrates the determination of Hindu fundamentalists to bring the film industry to heel. 

The scene takes place at the beginning of the year 2020 in Bombay. Actor Shah Rukh Khan has just received an invitation to meet Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, leader of Hindu fundamentalists, in New Delhi. The couple he forms with his wife, Gauri, an interior designer of Hindu obedience, with whom he had three children, perfectly embodies the multicultural and multi-confessional positions he has always defended. "The only disagreements I have with [her] concern the color of the walls in our living room and not the location of the walls delimiting the temples of the mosques in India" , he wrote in 2015 in a column for the American daily The New York . Times.

His charisma, the model of society he promotes, his Romeo and Juliet idyll – the young people dated in secret for seven years before the bride's parents, conservatives, consented to such a union – are not of the taste of the Prime Minister. In a few years, the icon has become a scarecrow for the Hindu extremists in power, until seeing his eldest son arrested in October 2021 for "drug trafficking" in troubled circumstances worthy of a thriller. Probably because its spectacular success makes millions of Indians dream as much as it inspires, contrary to a government ideology obsessed with a conspiracy theory according to which the Muslim and Christian minorities threaten the survival of Hinduism.
